Books, writing … and ice skating
Writers on Ice – created by authors Tania Chandler and Lucinda Gifford – is a lively ICE-CAST about writing, books and ice skating.
What’s an ‘Ice Cast?’
An ‘ice-cast’ is a vlog with a difference. We interview authors about creativity, writing, publishing and books – while they get their skates on and have a go at ice-skating.
Who is it for?
Bookworms, aspiring writers, established writers… anyone who loves books and publishing.
Why on ice?
Learning new skills is a joy. Ice skating is a joy. And we want to share that joy! We also want to share genuine insights and surprises, and what better way than to put our interviewees in a completely different environment (hee hee).

Your hosts: Tania & Lucinda
Tania Chandler is a writer and writing teacher. She was writing stories before she started primary school, but wanted to be an actor, so she studied drama. And did lots of jobs like bar tending, merchandising biscuits, and selling makeup – until she realised she was meant to be a writer. Her novels have been published in Australia and internationally, selected for reading programs and shortlisted for awards. All That I Remember About Dean Cola is her latest novel.
Tania roller-skated and roller-bladed as a kid, but a school excursion to an ice rink made her dream forever after of ice skating. Unfortunately, she always lived too far from any skating rinks – until recently when she moved house and discovered iceHQ nearby. And her childhood dream came true at last!
Books by Tania:
Lucinda Gifford is the author and illustrator of many well-loved books for kids. In the 90s, Lucinda studied architecture in Scotland, where she learned to draw fancy buildings and moody scenery. Many years later, she put some of her best drawings in a folio and started looking for work illustrating children’s books.
As a child, Lucinda read Noel Streatfield’s marvellous novel ‘White Boots’. She dreamed of leaping and twirling across the ice like the characters – bold, glamorous Lalla and quiet, talented Harriet. But, despite the Arctic conditions in Lucinda’s native Aberdeenshire, there was no ice to skate on. Many years later, Lucinda discovered IceHQ – the new rink nearby – and learned from Tania that the rink did lessons for adults. Now Lucinda can skate forwards and backwards without falling over, and is working on her twirling (if not leaping).

Get your skates on …
If you are a publisher or author with a book you’d like to promote on Writers on Ice, get in touch at: info@writersonice.com.
Skating experience is not necessary. We film at ICEHQ in Preston, Melbourne – and that’s where we’ll help get you started with skates, safety equipment and some tips to get you up and having fun on the ice. And if you get cold feet (sorry!) we can adjourn to the comfy cafe at ICE HQ.
